Michel Kazatchkine is a French physician and diplomate, better known for his international action for access to AIDS treatments. From February 2007 to 2012, he was Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The Global Fund is the leading multilateral institution for financing HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria prevention. Professor Michel Kazatchkine has been a major actor in the fight against AIDS for over 30 years, as a physician, researcher, administrator, advocate and diplomate. In July 2012, Professor Kazatchkine was appointed as the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Envoy for AIDS in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Professor Kazatchkine is also a Senior Fellow at the Global Health Centre of the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (IHEID) in Geneva and a member of the Global Commission on Drug Policy. Michel Kazatchkine carried out his medicine studies at the Faculty of Necker-Enfants-Malades in Paris, studied immunology at the Institut Pasteur, and completed his postdoctoral training at St Mary's Hospital in London and at Harvard Medical School in Boston.
